Up-selling is a technique used in sales where you invite the customer to buy additional items in order to generate more revenue for the store.
While it normally involves marketing more profitable products, it can be as simple as exposing the customer to other offers that may not have been considered.
Let’s look at an example here, you have a store where you’re primarily selling smartphones and other phone-related products, if a customer buys a phone from your store, you can maybe offer them an additional product like a phone case for example.
How is up-sell going to help you boost sales?
Up-selling will help you with customer retention, most customers don’t know what they want until you show it to them. How to do that? With an Upsell. If you show a customer something that solves a problem they used to face, it’s more than likely that the same customer will return for future purchases.
Therefore, you need some tips to help you succeed with Up-selling:
Use the " reviews " function to suggest products to your customers and direct them to more optimized ranges when they select a product, the product review section can look like this: "Customers who searched for 'laptop' bought these products"
Simplify the purchase process: customers make irrational buying decisions every day, and that’s mostly due to the simple purchase process, so if you complicate the purchase process and the customer has to make a lot of decisions before buying, the customer may simply leave. The same goes for Up-selling, make the Up-sell simple enough with few actions for the customer to take.
Lower prices: if you wish to sell an addition to the product that the customer will be buying, research shows that customers are more likely to buy if the price of the add-on is lower than their initial purchase.
